First-Time Curling? How to Prep, What to Bring, Aftercare

West Midtown (Marietta Street corridor), Atlanta, GA | 935 Marietta St NW suite 023, Atlanta, GA 30318

If you’re nervous about your first curling appointment, you’re not the only one. A lot of people come in with that same little question in the back of their mind, “Will it actually come out right on my hair or my unit?” One of our long-time clients put it simply: they feel “Flawless” every time they leave Chin’s chair, and they’ve been coming since 2010. That’s the vibe we keep. Professional, on-time, and focused on getting your curls to look good and hold up, especially in Atlanta humidity.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to prep, what to bring (including wigs and weaves), what happens step-by-step in the chair, and how to keep your curls bouncing after you leave West Midtown.
Before you pull up to West Midtown: curling prep that actually matters
For your first curling appointment, come with hair that’s clean and fully dry. If you washed that day, make sure it’s not still damp at the roots. Heavy oils, thick butters, and leave-in conditioners can weigh curls down and make them fall fast, so keep it light. If your hair tangles easily, detangle before you come in. It saves time and keeps the appointment smooth.
Bring this: 1 to 3 reference photos, your wig or weave if we’re styling your unit, and a quick note on curl size you want (loose waves vs. tighter curls). If you have a product you love, bring it. If not, don’t stress, we’ll handle the heat protectant and finish.
And tell us the truth about your day. Are these curls for everyday wear, a photo moment, or an event night out? That one detail changes how we set the curl and how we finish it so it lasts through commutes and Atlanta summer air.
Inside your curling appointment (45 to 90 minutes): what we do, in order
When you arrive, we start with a quick look at what we’re curling: natural hair, extensions, or a wig/unit you brought in. Then we talk through your inspo. We’re big on listening, because the difference between “soft glam” and “tight curls with volume” is real, and you shouldn’t have to keep repeating yourself.
Next comes prep for heat styling. We apply a heat protectant, section your hair cleanly, and choose the tool based on the curl you want. Our standard Curling service is $35. If you want wand curls, that’s an extra $20. Timing usually lands in the 45 to 90 minute range depending on length, thickness, and how much volume you want. Wigs and partial styling tend to run shorter.
If we’re curling a wig or extensions
We treat units like they’re going back on your head, because they are. If you’re wearing a lace unit, we’re careful around the lace and hairline area so the finish looks natural. Clients regularly talk about Chin’s technique with units and extensions, and that “foundation” matters, even when the appointment is “just curls.”
Heat settings matter too. If you have a synthetic wig or blend hair, let us know. We’ll use lower heat and a slower pace. If your unit is human hair, we can go for more definition or more movement depending on the look.
“Very professional and interacting! No long waiting and my hair is alway well done and slayed!”

To finish, we’ll separate curls, shape the style, and lock it in with the right hold. We’ll also tell you straight up if something you’re asking for won’t last on your hair type in Atlanta humidity without extra support. That honesty saves you frustration later.
Aftercare that helps curls survive Atlanta humidity (and your sleep)
Right after your appointment, your hair should feel light, bouncy, and set. You shouldn’t feel crunch unless you asked for stronger hold. If you’re in Atlanta in the summer, humidity is the real opponent, so we usually recommend you keep an anti-humidity serum or spray on deck and avoid over-touching the curls during the day.
Sleeping tips (this is where curls get ruined)
Use a satin scarf or satin pillowcase. For longer hair or a unit, gently gather it up before bed so you’re not crushing the curl pattern all night. In the morning, fluff with your fingers, not a brush.
Rebook timing: If you love being styled and ready, many people come back around their next event or when they want a refresh without spending all day in the shop. Our regulars mention they appreciate not having to sit all day, and we keep that same energy for curling appointments too.
Our “insider” curling tips for Midtown, Buckhead, and stadium nights
If you’re coming in from Midtown, Buckhead, Downtown Atlanta, Atlantic Station, Smyrna, or Vinings, here’s what tends to make the biggest difference: plan your curls around the weather, not just the outfit. Atlanta’s humid summers can puff out soft curls fast, so if you’re going for long wear, ask us for a finish with flexible hold and humidity support.
Another tip people don’t talk about: tell us how you’re wearing your hair tomorrow. If you know you’ll pull it up, we’ll place curls so the top and hairline still look good when it’s pinned. If you’re wearing a custom unit, bring it in the way you actually wear it so the part and front pieces fall right.
“Her work is top tier, every single time. I always walk out looking like a million bucks.”

If you’re ready to stop guessing and start getting consistent results, come see us in West Midtown off the Marietta Street corridor. We’ll talk through your goal, choose the right curl method (including wand curls if that’s your look), and send you out the door with curls that make sense for real life.
Quick details: Curling is $35. Wand curls are +$20. Bring your photos and your unit if we’re styling a wig or weave.
